Blue Governor in Red State = VETOS ... THANK GOD!

Every few months out here in Arizona, we get an article in one paper or another that talks about how frequently our Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano VETOS legislation.  Instead of these stories being a tribute to her strength and resolve to block ridiculous legislation - the question is always asked "IS SHE DOING IT TOO MUCH?".

One of those articles came out today in the Arizona Republic ... and there is an online poll attached.

Before reading on - please visit the online poll (scroll down it is on the left side) - and vote that the Govenor "exercises her veto power correctly in most cases".  I know, if you are like me you were looking for the option that said "HELL YEAH, THE GOP IS NUTS IN THIS STATE", but the answer above is the best we can get.

More over the jump.Of course the article is a little slanted in my opinion - instead of highlighting her repeated veto of guns in bars legislation (daily show did a bit on this one once) or unconstitutional and insufficient English Language Learner funding - all that is mentioned are vetos highlighted to make her unpopular with Republicans.

Since taking office in 2003, Napolitano has vetoed a near-record 110 bills, drawing jeers and cheers from an array of special-interest groups and lawmakers. She has wielded her veto stamp like a hammer to kill legislation aimed at putting more National Guard troops at the border, creating a waiting period for abortions and making it tougher for patients to win lawsuits against emergency-room doctors.

The state party put together a webpage last year highlighting some of the most important vetos the Governor has made.  You can find that page here. (You may be confused by the introductory letter on there - but the AZ GOP sent an email out linking a part of the azdem page, and the link was changed to greet the new visitors.)

My favorite ALL TIME veto has to be when she put a stop to legislation to allow guns in bars - a GREAT combination.  From the ADP:

Private restaurants and bars that serve alcohol would be forced to either allow patrons to carry firearms in their facilities or spend their own resources to develop, enforce and post large signs to announce policies against having guns in their facilities. (SB 1363)
[From Gov. Napolitano's Veto Letter:]  "I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and consult its plain language when analyzing gun ownership rights. When it comes to common sense gun safety issues, however, I am particularly interested in the views of the law enforcement community, (which) have consistently opposed this legislation."

Yeah - some of the stuff they want is pretty darn scary.

To all you Arizonans out there - PLEASE REMEMBER, in order for the Governor to keep this veto we need to not only reelect her - but ensure we lose ZERO seats in the legislature.  If the GOP in this state got a super majority - we would all be in SERIOUS SERIOUS trouble.
